The Right OxyContin Detox Can Help Anyone Achieve Successful Recovery

The more OxyContin a person takes, the more tolerant their bodies become to the addictive narcotic painkiller, which leads inexorably to the need for higher and higher doses. Entering drug rehab is unthinkable, because of the horrible side effects of withdrawal — OxyContin detox is just as nasty as withdrawing from heroin, morphine, or any other street drug.

This is situation faced daily by those suffering from addiction to any serious drug, whether it’s heroin, morphine, cocaine, methamphetamine, or a whole list of addictive prescription painkillers like OxyContin. Eventually, the drug rules your life. There’s little time left in the day for anything other than getting more of the drug.

Some people turn to their doctors, who too often have been taken in by the methadone message — replace your OxyContin (or heroin, or any other narcotic) addiction, which is ruling your life 24/7, with methadone, which only requires one dose a day, letting you get on with your life.

What they’re not saying (and trying hard not to think about) is that methadone “treatment” is more trouble than it is treatment. This all comes into clear focus when someone who’s been on methadone for a substantial length of time tries to get off the drug. And they usually want to get off the drug because instead of freedom from an OxyContin addiction, they’re trapped in an equally horrible, if somewhat different, situation with methadone.

Methadone detox can be not only very difficult and very, very painful, but also very time consuming — sometimes requiring weeks or months when following the traditional tapering-off methadone withdrawal method.

If you or anyone you know has an OxyContin problem — even if it’s still a valid prescription — and think it’s just fine, then it’s time to think again. The investigation into actor Heath Ledger’s death, for example, has brought international attention to a real health concern: Overdose fatalities from OxyContin and similar prescription painkillers have risen dramatically since the 1990s, with unintentional deaths doubling since 1999 — now approaching 25,000 a year.

During this time, prescription drugs — primarily OxyContin, methadone and other prescription opioid (narcotic) painkillers — have overtaken cocaine and heroin combined as the leading cause of fatal overdoses.

Although overdose deaths have been increasing since the early 1990s, more recently the rise has been so dramatic that it is behind the first sustained increase in 25 years in the nation’s overall injury death rate. Unintentional poisoning deaths involving other psychotherapeutic drugs, including antidepressants and tranquilizers, grew 84 percent from 1999 to 2004, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control. And headline-grabbing overdose deaths like Anna Nicole Smith’s and Heath Ledger’s are only the tip of the iceberg, say the experts.

So what to do about one’s OxyContin problem? The only sensible action is to enter a medical drug detox center where an OxyContin detox is medically supervised 24/7, and the withdrawal symptoms are therapeutically managed with assistive drugs and nutrition, carefully worked out to match your unique metabolism and DNA.

Medical drug detox is a far cry from the one-size-fits-all detox scenarios so common across the country — some of them little better than a week alone in a locked room — that is often offered as a solution to OxyContin addiction. In the right medical drug detox setting, OxyContin detox is accomplished in just a few days, with a minimum of discomfort.
