The Novus Prescription Drug Booklet – Educate Yourself and Others

THE CONSEQUENCE OF HEALTH CARE REFORM

Some say that it is intended and others say that it is unintended, but one certain consequence of President Obama’s planned health care reform is that the move toward the medical model of “giving a drug to treat the symptoms” will accelerate. While I confess that I have not read the bills now being proposed, one thing seems agreed—they are going to reduce the amounts paid to medical doctors for their services to help pay for the bill.

As we know, all events have consequences. The consequence of reducing the amount of reimbursements paid to medical doctors will lead to more Radio Medicine. This is where the doctor doesn’t try to cure the problem causing your symptoms but only writes a prescription for a drug that will hopefully, like the radio in a car, turn up the volume enough to block the symptoms from being felt. Of course, the underlying problem is not addressed and almost always gets worse. In addition, the drugs normally will cause side effects that you will have in addition to the original problem and that will require further medication to “treat”.

You see, it is plain economics. If you used to get $50 per office visit from the insurance company or Medicare and now you only get $25 per office visit, you will have to see twice as many people to make the same income. Since medical doctors run a business that demands that their income exceed their expenses, the medical doctors will have to cut expenses and also reduce the time they spend with each patient even more.

As we discussed last week, there has been a movement toward the definition of “treat” which simply says that the doctors will give medical aid but not the definition which envisions medical aid to cure the actual problem. Obama Care will just increase this movement in the interest of providing health care to everyone. Everyone that is familiar with the Canadian system knows that it works well—until you need more than just routine care.

EDUCATION ABOUT DRUGS IS NO LONGER AN OPTION

For this reason it is more critical that each of us educate ourselves about the truth regarding the prescription drugs that will likely be used more and more by doctors. During the last few years, members of our Novus Medical Detox Center team have delivered talks to many groups about the abuse of prescription drugs. One of the things that we all see from these talks is the amount of ignorance about these drugs on the part of most people.

This applies to adults and children. There is the mother who told the story of the dentist that gave her 15-year-old son a prescription for OxyContin after two wisdom teeth were removed. The mother said she thought that they were a type of “super” aspirin and did not suspect anything when her son kept asking for more pills. He became addicted to this form of legal heroin and later had to be detoxed and sent to rehab.

Had the mother known that this drug was legal heroin, she would have asked for something less addictive or insisted that the prescription be for five pills, not 40.

Fueled by huge amounts of drug company spending on advertising, parents are being told that they should give their children stimulants like Ritalin, Adderall or Concerta. However, these drugs are Schedule II drugs like cocaine. Does your child have a cocaine deficiency?

Millions more of us are told that if we are tired, are sad or are experiencing a myriad of other symptoms, then we really don’t need to find out the actual cause of the problem but we should just  take an anti-depressant like Paxil, Effexor, Cymbalta, Lexapro or Zoloft or a benzodiazepine like Xanax or Ativan.

Can’t sleep? The Radio Medicine answer is to prescribe a sedative/hypnotic like Ambien or Lunesta. These drugs again treat the symptom and because they cause a form of amnesia, many people taking them actually feel they sleep more than they really do. The actual tests done by doctors not paid by the drug companies show few benefits from these drugs.

THE PROBLEM

Before Obama Care, many doctors felt that it was part of their job to explain the risks of these drugs and possible alternative forms of treatment. Now that their patient time is being reduced more and more, these doctors will be very reluctant to explain anything except to “take two in the morning with water and let me know how you are feeling.”

As we explained in last week’s newsletter, none of these drugs actually treat anything. Never before have we had the responsibility to educate ourselves about not only the symptoms that we are having but the drugs being offered by the doctors.

Most of us were not trained as medical doctors and have been taught to rely on the advice of our doctors. However, with the advent of Radio Medicine, we have to become more responsible for our healthcare and the healthcare of our friends and family.

THE SOLUTION

How do we get this education? All of us lead busy lives. We barely have time to do our work and raise our families. It is very difficult to confront the idea, no matter how important, that we have to educate ourselves about this very complicated area.

Novus has an answer that we believe will provide you with enough information that you can ask the doctor questions and demand real treatment—not just drugs.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG BOOKLET

At Novus we are proud to announce that we are preparing a simple booklet that seeks to provide a way for the parent, teacher or child to become educated as to the drugs that they are offered either by a doctor or maybe by a “friend.” We have printed two previous versions of this booklet and have used these booklets in talks to different types of groups. We solicit comments from these groups and believe that we now have a format that will be useful to everyone. Here is the outline of the book.

I. How To Use This Book—this contains some information about how people can use the book.

II. Comparison of the common definition of “safe” with the FDA definition of “safe”—not that a drug will not harm but that it does more good than harm.

III. Then we take the class of drugs labeled “Anti-Depressants”:

a. We list the most common of these drugs;

b. Then we list some facts about these drugs;

c. Next we show a typical “Black Box” warning for these drugs—an FDA warning about the dangerousness of the drugs;

d. This is followed by a list of the major side effects of the drugs;

e. Then we list the signs of depression from the National Institute of Mental Health and on the next page list the symptoms of thyroid problems from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinology—which are almost the same.

IV. The Anti-Psychotic Class of drugs is next:

a. We list the most common of these drugs;

b. Next we provide some facts about these drugs;

c. Then we show the FDA “Black Box” warning for one of the drugs;

d. Finally, there is a list of the most common side effects of these drugs.

V. We follow this same pattern for Sedatives/Hypnotics, Benzodiazepines, Opioids and Opiates and Stimulant Drugs (ADHD drugs). In the ADHD section, we discuss the fact that many children exhibiting the supposed symptoms of ADHD may have vision problems that, once corrected, will resolve the problem.

VI. We set forth the definition of “treat” used by medical doctors and explain how the person should seek a doctor who believes treat means to actually find and cure the underlying physiological problem—not just treat the symptoms.

VII. There is an index of the generic and trade names of each of the drugs listed, so that if someone gives a name of a drug you can look in the index, find the drug and what page it’s on. Then you can go to that page and inform yourself about the drug.

VIII. Then we have some sample questions to ask the doctor or someone else about a drug—like what medical test was given that showed the need for the drug.

IX. Next is a section setting forth some tips on talking to another about a drug that they are taking or may take so that they can be educated about the drug and how important it is to ensure that there is not a better alternative.

X. Following this is a glossary defining a number of key words, so that if you hear the terms you can look in the glossary to get a quick understanding of the word.

XI. We will then discuss Radio Medicine and how to find a doctor to whom someone can be referred who will work to find a cure and determine if the person needs to take the drug or not.

XII. At the end of the booklet will be the end notes providing the source for the statements in the booklet. Much of the information about the dangerousness of the drugs is taken directly from the drug labels for the drugs. Other information comes from medical studies and books.
