Prescription Opiates: Destroying The American Dream
Just how bad is the so-called “prescription drug epidemic” we keep hearing about? And if it is really serious, should we really care?
For example, is it really true that abuse, addiction and death involving prescription opiates now affects more people than the “street drugs” cocaine and heroin combined?
In fact, the answer to this last question is absolutely true. The latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other sources back up those claims with some horrendous statistics:
- Enough prescription opiates were prescribed last year to keep every American adult dosed with 5mg of hydrocodone every four hours for a month. That’s 30mg a day – plenty enough, for long enough, to get a large percentage of people dependent or outright addicted.
- Prescription opiates caused more than 40,000 drug overdose deaths last year, far more than cocaine and heroin combined.
- The cost to just health insurers is approximately $72.5 billion annually. The total cost of prescription drug abuse, addiction and death to America and Americans is almost incalculable – at least $300 billion – when you add the cost to employers for lost production, families for lost wages, and the trickle-down in taxes that eventually, everyone has to pay.
And keep in mind that most prescription opiates aren’t coming from big-time drug cartels or small-time pushers. They are coming from tens of thousands of drug stores all over America filling doctor-ordered prescriptions for OxyContin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, Vicodin, Percocet, Lortab, Fentanyl, Tramadol, Roxicontin – there are dozens of opiate painkillers on the market today, and more coming from Big Pharma on a regular basis.
So just how bad is the prescription drug epidemic? As you can see, it’s very bad indeed.
And should we care?
Well the answer to that is obvious. Dependencies, addictions and messed up lives aren’t all “over there”. The effects of prescription drugs are happening right here in our own cities and towns, on our own streets and in our own homes. You can’t go outside and walk a single block in any town in America and not pass an office, store, house or apartment building where someone inside is suffering from bad effects of prescription drugs.
