Why Have Some Heroin Addicts Lost Hope of Ever Being Drug Free?
Regardless of how difficult it is, most heroin addicts have one thing in common – they want to get off heroin. It’s not the easiest thing to do: some addicts have tried to quit on their own, some have gone to drug detox and rehab centers but not been successful, and others have seen or heard of the horror of withdrawal symptoms and are scared to try it. Still others go the methadone route and trade one addiction for another. What does it really take to get someone through a heroin detox and rehab successfully they can end their heroin addiction once and for all?
The first step is a good heroin detox to get through withdrawal. Although it usually takes more than detox to fully rehabilitate a heroin addict so he stays drug free, this first step is often the major stumbling block. Why? Because many addicts leave drug detox centers before they’ve completed their program, or their program didn’t truly detox them. So, they leave the center and get right back into heroin addiction.
Why would a heroin addict leave before detox is complete? Because their reaction to the withdrawal process was too difficult. Each person has a unique reaction to heroin addiction and withdrawal and, consequently, successful withdrawal has to include monitoring those reactions very closely and being able to adapt the drug detox program to the person’s day-to-day and hour-to-hour progress.
Unfortunately, most drug detox centers have a cookie cutter approach – which does not work with heroin addiction or with addiction to most other drugs. The addict is given a specific dosage of a withdrawal drug for a specific period of time and, regardless of what the addict is going through, they get no more and no less. And they’re in detox for a certain number of days, no more and no less.
It just doesn’t work that way: some addicts go through extreme and unnecessary pain and discomfort and leave the detox center before they’re finished because they just can’t take it anymore. They choose heroin addiction over the agony of detox.
A good heroin detox center understands that we all have different metabolisms and DNA. They listen to what you’re saying, observe what you’re going through, and respond to your needs. You may have tried to overcome your heroin addiction many times, and may even think it’s hopeless. But, it’s not. A good heroin detox program that can get you through withdrawal with minimal discomfort, at a speed you can tolerate, is the answer to heroin addiction. From there, you can go on to drug rehab if needed, and conquer the demons that got you there in the first place.
