Florida Alcohol Detox Helps Prevent Fatal DUIs
We hear a lot about prescription drug abuse these days, and indeed there is reason for grave concern. But alcohol is still the most dangerous substance of abuse in America.
More people die, more people are injured or incapacitated, and more lives and families are ruined because of alcohol abuse than all other drugs combined.
And don’t be mistaken – by every definition, alcohol is a drug, and a very toxic one at that.
People driving while under the influence of alcohol, the infamous “DUI”, is what kills more than 10,000 Americans every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
That’s why a timely alcohol detox program, for anyone troubled by alcohol dependence, helps save lives by preventing potential alcohol-related DUIs.
Alcohol DUIs are killing people in Florida
This past week in Florida, for example, two individuals from different parts of the state were in court for killing someone because they were driving drunk.
One of them, Terry Eugene Lee of Navarre, FL, was driving his Toyota last November with a blood alcohol content of .26 to .27 – way above the legal limit of .08, and bordering on levels considered fatal for most people.
Lee was drunk enough, and travelling fast enough, to leave the road and careen through a fence and across a pasture, bounce off a tree, and then smash into another fence with enough force to drive one of the fence boards through the windshield and right through his companion, Brandee Scott, of Pensacola. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lee was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he recovered from his injuries. And this week, he entered a no contest plea to charges of DUI manslaughter, as well as charges of felony driving on a suspended license, and DUI causing property damage. Lee faces up to 20 years in state prison, and will be sentenced at a later date.
Another North Florida man, 29-year-old Joshua Turpin, was sentenced last week to 10 years and five months in state prison, for a fatal DUI crash back in February, 2010. Turpin pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter. His driver license was permanently revoked.
Authorities say Turpin failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the center line, and crashed head-on into a car driven by 52-year-old Angela Kay Maddolin. The registered nurse – on her way to work at a Gainesville hospital – was pronounced dead at the scene. Turpin told police he had been steadily drinking beer in a local bar for more than 4 hours before he climbed behind the wheel of his pickup.
The DUIs just keep on coming
Everyone in America who is old enough to read a newspaper, magazine, poster or billboard, or watch television now and then, certainly has been exposed to countless public health messages exhorting them to never, ever, drink alcohol and then drive.
Yet people go right on doing it.
Decades of daily news reports, grisly photos and videos of mangled vehicles in which people died – nothing has significantly reduced the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents and fatalities. People all over America still drink and then get into their vehicles and drive.
A startlingly large proportion of these people suffer from at least moderate alcohol dependence, if not outright alcoholism.
How to choose the right Florida alcohol detox
We should also mention that a frightening proportion of people trying to get off alcohol suffer injury, and often die, because they didn’t know how dangerous an alcohol detox can be without experienced medical assistance.
In Florida, alcohol detox is among the most-sought-after treatments. But not too surprisingly, many people don’t know how to evaluate and choose between the various detox programs available. Novus Medical Detox Center, in Pasco County, FL, has years of experience providing safe medical alcohol detox.
