The horrific number of fatalities in Florida involving the painkiller oxycodone — among the highest in the nation — drives home the critical need for effective, life-saving Florida detox programs.

In a recent public statement, Florida Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp said:

  • Prescription drug overdoses kill six Floridians a day — 2,190 people a year.
  • Deaths involving prescription drugs increased 77 percent from 2003 to 2008.
  • There are five times more deaths from prescription drugs than all illegal drugs combined.
  • Deaths involving prescription drugs more often than not involve the dangerous painkiller oxycodone.

Obviously, with these kinds of statistics and conditions in Florida, detox for oxycodone addiction and dependence is a major factor in combating the soaring death rate.

Pill Mills Masquerade As Pain Clinics

Lt. Governor Kottkamp’s job includes managing Florida’s Statewide Drug Policy Advisory Council, which is battling “unscrupulous pill pushers and criminals who profit from prescription drug diversion” across the state. Nearly all of the top 50 prescribers of oxycodone in the United States are located in Florida, Kottkamp said.

At the heart of this scourge of prescription drug deaths are Florida’s hundreds of so-called “pill mills” — usually advertised as “pain clinics” — located all across the state.

Pill mills can be doctors’ offices, walk-in clinics or other alleged health care facilities, but all of them conspire to dispense controlled subscription drugs, while violating prescription drug laws and flaunting standard medical practice.

In just the second half of 2008 alone, pill mills in South Florida dispensed nearly 9 million doses of oxycodone — the equivalent of more than two doses for every man, woman and child in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties combined.

Kottkamp said the state’s new Prescription Drug Monitoring System is expected to be a powerful tool against the pill mills.

Florida Detox Programs Help Oxycodone Addiction

Most lives lost to oxycodone addiction and all other drug abuse can be saved by a timely drug detox. Just like everywhere else in the world, in Florida, detox is the essential first step toward recovering one’s life through drug rehabilitation.

Here in Florida, detox programs for every kind of substance abuse and dependence are available. Florida detox programs help victims of drug dependence and abuse overcome their physical craving for every type of commonly abused substance, whether prescription or illicit, all across the state.

And the good news is that, right here in Florida, detox for oxycodone dependence is offered by Novus Medical Detox Center in Pasco County.
