The FDA admits by itself that it can not currently do the jog of policing the nation's food and drug supply but I think that is going to take more than funding to resolve this issue. Some fundemental changes about how drug/devices are approved and monitored are needed.

I am one of the people mentioned in the blog who initiated the internet petition against FDA preemption. We include healthcare professionals, academics, patient advocates, and concerned citizens. We are an entirely stand-alone group, receiving no support, funding, or the like from anyone. We just contribute our own time and concern.

If you visit the petition, you will see it has gathered 300 signatures in a couple of days, including some very well known people (whose participation has been confirmed). It has become clear that there are a great number of Americans (including many in pharma who sign anonymously) who are outraged in the face of preemption. But they also feel isolated. The petition is a first step toward bringing those voices together.

We have no illusions. We are committed to seeing this through.

Comment on Methadone Addiction and Heroin Addiction are One and the Same – They Just Come in Different Packages by Paul D

This is a very interesting posting. I think Methadone is a double edged sword. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years. In the last 5 years of my addiction I was on Methadone for 1 year 9 months. I went up to 195mg/day. While on Methadone I did NOT one shot of Heroin, also had no desire to steal or turn tricks to get dope. Methadone will keep you off the streets, because you can't even get off the couch! I was addicted to the Methadone after it was all over and done. I had a counselor that had been at the clinic for 13 years, he really cared about my well being. At 195mg/day he and I started to detox me slowly, 10mg/week. I went all the way down to 2mg/day and on that Friday when I was supposed to go down to 1mg I never went back! Methadone worked for me, but I din't want to be a slave to Heroin anymore! I'm not an advocate for Methadone, please don't get me wrong! I think Medical Detox is the way to go, after medical detox have a plan, inpatient, out patient, NA, whatever works for you!! Grateful Recovering Addict named Paul!! Thanks!

Thanks for raising the profile of a very important legal and public policy issue.

I think once patients know that this is, in fact, immunity for Big Pharma to legal liability for unsafe drugs, they will stand opposed to application of the federal preempition doctrine to drug injury lawsuits.

The problem is, however, few patients are aware of Wyeth v. Levine and its widespread implications.

Keep up the good work.

Its a start in the right direction. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and currently in school studying for my degree as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Big Pharma is a Big problem
I am amazed at how many patients we see in our clinic are buried in the system of Western Medicine. They have multiple medications; most of them - for LIFE. Some of these people have been willing to try other options, and have done quite well with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Even though most of what we do is not covered by insurance, people still come to us and are willing to pay for the visit and if applicable- herbs. It still is only a fraction of the cost compared to Western treatment and Pharma!!! So keeping us out of the "insurance loop" hasn't seemed to have had much of an effect. The numbers are favorable for CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) and once people try it - they like it. The Medicine sells itself - not with fancy gimmicks but with positive results and by bringing a patient back to their natural state of harmony and balance. You can't achieve that with a pill!

Zyprexa has generated a lot of bad press for Eli Lilly and they still have unresolved Zyprexa settlement claims.
Eli Lilly is 'reaping the whirlwind' for aggressive marketing of Zyprexa that has caused suffering and deaths.
Zyprexa is being avoided by doctors they aren't prescribing it for new patients at all anymore.

What I enjoyed most about this article is the writing craft of turning a "non-story" into a real, meaty piece of work, that any reader could grind their teeth on, as they reflect upon the financial and product irregularities of this company. The focus is kept on those individuals likely to have originated and supported the company's misdeeds, without including the average joe 'worker-bee'. It's a fine distinction.

This story is accurate. I Randolph Simens know of others that have suffered from the lack of warning about compulsive behavior stemming from NO WARNINGS on Prescriptions of Mirapex. I've lost millions of dollars and have just about ruined my marrage. Now major Pharma is remarketing this snake oil to a market of people with RLS. You've seen the Mirapex commercials on TV where they now warn of compulsive side effects. If they had just warned before I would have understood the side effects and been Millions of Dollars richer. This stuff is poison like Thalidamise or Vioxx. Any comments please email RSiMENS@AOL>COM I've filed suit pro se in NY SUPREME COURT; I am not a lawyer but could sure use one that has the cojones to fight for whats right against major pharma
Thanks
